In 1917, a Catholic high school for girls called Villa Maria College was opened in Christchurch. In 1921, the first male students were admitted to this primary and secondary educational institute of learning. This all-girls boarding facility halted its boarders between 1935 and 1979 before transitioning into an integrated state college from 1981 onward under New Zealand’s Private Schools Conditional Integration Act 1975. The Sisters of Mercy maintain ownership through their sisterhood even though it transitioned out as a private institution since WWII ended decades ago while remaining faithful to Catholicism despite being fully coeducational today!
